Without fragrance and essential oils: ingredients at a glance
At forpeople, the products without added fragrance and without essential oils are the pure oils (jojoba, argan, almond, wild rose seed), the Aloe Vera Serum 99.6%, the Sensitive Deodorant Cream, the Solid Sunscreen SPF50 in all versions, the Solid Hand Cream with beeswax and the Solid Body Butter. Their ingredient lists (INCI) contain neither “Parfum” nor an essential oil nor any of the declarable fragrance substances such as linalool or limonene. So you can tell whether a product is fragrance-free from the INCI: look for “Parfum” or “Fragrance”, for oils with plant names such as “Lavandula Angustifolia Oil” and for individual substances such as linalool, limonene, citral or geraniol.
How to spot fragrances in the INCI
The ingredients are listed in order of quantity on the packaging and on every product page. Three kinds of entries reveal an added fragrance:
- “Parfum” or “Fragrance”: the collective term for an added fragrance blend. The substances it contains do not have to be listed individually, except for the declarable fragrance substances. No forpeople product contains “Parfum”.
- Essential oils: They appear in the list under their Latin plant name, for example “Lavandula Angustifolia Oil” (lavender), “Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil” (rosemary), “Cymbopogon Flexuosus Oil” (lemongrass), “Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Peel Oil” (bergamot) or “Eucalyptus Radiata Flower/Leaf/Stem Oil” (eucalyptus). Plant oils such as “Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil” (jojoba) or “Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil” (almond), on the other hand, are fatty oils and not fragrances.
- Declarable fragrance substances: linalool, limonene, citral, geraniol, citronellol and others. The EU Cosmetics Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009) requires these substances to be listed individually in the INCI as soon as their content exceeds 0.001% in products that stay on the skin, or 0.01% in products that are rinsed off. In 2023, the EU extended the list of these substances.
These fragrance substances are often referred to as “fragrance allergens”. This is a term from the labelling requirements: it states which substances must be declared. The requirement applies regardless of origin. Linalool from lavender oil is declared in exactly the same way as linalool from a perfume blend. That is why linalool, limonene or citral appear on the list for forpeople products with essential oils, even though they contain no perfume.

The table shows all single products currently available. Products with the same formula, such as tin, refill and travel size, are listed in one row. The count is of the components as they appear in the INCI on the product page. “Water-free” means: no water (“Aqua”) and no plant juice in the INCI.

The SOS Pitch Salve contains no added essential oil. However, the larch resin (“Larix Decidua Resin”) brings its own fragrant components, which is why pinene, terpinolene, alpha-terpinene and terpineol appear in the INCI. The Lip Balm SPF15 Almond & Vanilla contains neither an essential oil nor a declarable fragrance substance, but it does contain vanilla extract (“Vanilla Planifolia Extract”). Water-free and without preservatives
Germs need water to multiply. If a formula contains no water, this reason for preservatives no longer applies. For the water-free forpeople products in the tables, no preservative appears in the INCI. The Aloe Vera Serum consists mainly of aloe vera leaf juice and therefore contains potassium sorbate (“Potassium Sorbate”) and sodium benzoate (“Sodium Benzoate”). The solid soaps contain water, which is needed for saponification during production.
The pure oils have the fewest components, with one ingredient each. Among the creams and salves without fragrance, the Solid Hand Cream – Beeswax has five components, and the Sensitive Deodorant Cream, the Solid Sunscreen SPF50 and the Solid Body Butter – Beeswax & Aloe Vera have six each.
Sets
Sets contain the single products from the tables. Whether a set is fragrance-free depends on all of its components. The sets currently made up only of products without added fragrance are the Care Oil Set – 4 Organic Oils for Face, Body & Hair, the Sun Set – Mineral SPF 50 & Aloe After-Sun, the Hand Care Set – For Rough, Cracked Hands (2× Solid Hand Cream) and the Body Care Set – For Dry, Tight Skin (2× Body Butter). Important: “fragrance-free” does not mean “suitable for every skin”
Products without added fragrance also consist of plant oils, plant butters, waxes and extracts that some people may react to. If you know that you do not tolerate a particular substance, check the INCI component by component against your list. Try a new product on a small patch of skin first. If you have skin problems, seek medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is beeswax a fragrance?
No. Beeswax (“Cera Alba”) has a slight natural scent of its own, as do shea butter, cocoa butter and larch resin. This is the smell of the raw material itself, not an added fragrance. That is why no declarable fragrance substances appear in the INCI of products such as the Solid Hand Cream with beeswax.
Why is linalool on the list when there is no perfume in it?
Linalool is a component of many essential oils, for example lavender. The EU Cosmetics Regulation requires linalool and other declarable fragrance substances to be listed individually above a certain amount, regardless of whether they come from an essential oil or from a perfume blend.
Which forpeople products have the fewest ingredients?
The pure oils consist of a single ingredient: jojoba oil, argan oil, almond oil and wild rose seed oil. The Aloe Vera Serum has four components, the Solid Hand Cream with beeswax five.
Is there a deodorant without fragrances?
Yes. The Sensitive Deodorant Cream consists of six components: potato starch, shea butter, baking soda (“Sodium Bicarbonate”), sunflower oil, corn starch and candelilla wax. It contains no essential oil, no fragrance and no water.
