The rule comes from a shared-flat kitchen. Benno, a climbing instructor and trained sports masseur, couldn’t find a hand cream that helped his worn hands for long — so he started mixing his own. The first formula worked without water, because water dilutes what is meant to work. In 2019 it became the first product. Everything since is made by the same rule: few ingredients, and every one has to earn its place.

Why does the INCI list say “Aqua” when we talk about water-free products?

Our solid products are now based on aloe vera rather than the classic “water-free”. The aloe vera juice is powdered (the natural water is removed) and added back during production. Under the NATRUE natural cosmetics standard we still have to declare this so-called process water as “Aqua” – even though it is really the natural water from the aloe.

Other certifiers handle this differently, so the rule sadly isn't uniform. On the product page we list it correctly as aloe vera juice. We could only avoid “Aqua” if we used fresh aloe vera juice directly. But the producer had concerns about the saponification here. We're not giving up on the topic, though, because INCI transparency matters to us.

So why does the Aloe Vera Serum not say “Aqua”?

For the Aloe Vera Serum we use ready-made aloe vera juice directly in the formulation — we don't remove any water from it and don't add any process water back. So this production step is skipped entirely and there's no “Aqua” to declare.
