People who go to the mountains or climb regularly usually have their gear sorted long ago. What is missing after a long day shows on the skin: fingertips are dry and rough after bouldering, heels have been working in boots for hours, lips have taken wind and sun. A skincare gift starts right there, gets used and takes up little space.
What a skincare gift for the outdoors should do
For days outside, four practical points matter.
- Solid rather than liquid: Solid creams, salves and sticks do not leak in a backpack. How they behave in heat and cold is explained in Storing solid cosmetics: heat, summer and winter.
- Meant for afterwards: Climbers apply cream after the session, not before, because a fresh layer of fat makes holds slippery and clumps the chalk. The reasons are in Moisturise before or after climbing? Foot cream also belongs to the evening, not in the boot on the morning of the tour.
- Small and sturdy: a metal tin, a glass jar or a stick in a paper tube, in a size that fits into the lid pocket.
- Scent to taste: Some like a herbal scent after the tour, others none at all. Which products contain essential oils is listed further down.
For climbers: hands and fingertips
Chalk, rock and plastic holds are hardest on the fingertips. What magnesia does to the skin is explained in Climbing chalk: what it does to your skin. After the session, a water-free cream keeps the skin supple. How climbers file down thick edges and care for their calluses is covered in Caring for fingertip calluses when climbing. A fine callus file goes well with the cream.
According to its ingredient list, the Solid Hand Cream - Beeswax consists of beeswax, olive and sunflower oil, St. John's wort and aloe extract; it contains no added fragrance. The vegan Solid Vegan Hand Cream - Bergamot is based on candelilla wax, jojoba oil, olive oil, shea butter and hemp oil and smells of lemon and bergamot. Both cost €9.90 for 30 g in a metal tin. The comparison is in Solid hand cream: beeswax or bergamot – which one suits you?
For a steady supply there are the Hand Care Set – For Rough, Cracked Hands (2× Solid Hand Cream) and the Vegan Hand Care Set – For Dry Hands (2× Bergamot), each €16.90 for one tin and one refill. Once the tin is empty, you press the refill into it; how that works is explained in Refillable Hand Cream: How the Refill Works.
For very rough patches on the palms and fingers, the SOS Pitch Salve - Larch Resin in a Glass Jar (50 g, €16.90) made from olive oil, larch resin and beeswax suits the evening. It smells clearly of resin. Open spots, torn calluses and bleeding cracks are not creamed but kept clean and covered.
For hikers: feet, lips and sun
After a long day in boots, heels and the balls of the feet need care. The Solid Foot Cream – Rosemary & Sage (40 g, €9.90), made from sunflower oil, beeswax, olive oil and shea butter with essential oils of rosemary, eucalyptus and clary sage, is meant for exactly that. It is care for the evenings before and after the tour, not blister protection. What matters against blisters, namely broken-in boots, suitable socks and taping pressure points early, is covered in Foot care before and after hiking.
Anyone who hikes a lot will appreciate a supply: the Foot Care Set – For Dry, Rough Feet (2× Rosemary Cream) contains two foot creams with 80 g in total, including a refill according to the product page (€16.90). The Foot Care Set XL – for Dry Feet consists of one tin and three refills with 160 g in total (€29.90).
On the ridge and in the snow, wind and sun come into play. The Lip Balm - SPF15 Almond & Vanilla (5 g, €7.90) contains the mineral filters zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, both non-nano according to the ingredient list. Whether lips need sun protection is explained in Do I need lip balm with SPF? For face, ears and the backs of the hands, the Solid Sunscreen SPF50 Mini (20 g, €9.90) fits: mineral with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and tested water-resistant. What is different at altitude and on snow is covered in Sun protection in the mountains and on snow.

Scent, allergies and age limits
This information comes from the product pages.
- No added fragrance: the beeswax hand cream and the sunscreen. The SPF15 lip balm contains vanilla extract but no essential oils.
- With essential oils: the foot cream (rosemary, eucalyptus, clary sage; declared are linalool, limonene and geraniol), the bergamot hand cream (lemon and bergamot; limonene, geraniol, citral, linalool) and the Lip Balm - Lemongrass (citral, citronellol, geraniol). An overview of all products is in Without fragrance and essential oils: ingredients at a glance.
- Resin: The pitch salve contains larch resin; its list also includes pinene, terpinolene, alpha-terpinene and terpineol. Anyone who reacts to tree resin or colophony is better off without a resin product. More in Colophony allergy, propolis, beeswax: symptoms and advice.
- Almonds: Both lip balms contain almond oil.
- Age limits: According to the product page, the foot cream is not suitable for children under 7 because it contains eucalyptol and camphor. This also applies to the sets with foot cream, i.e. the skincare Travel Set and the Outdoor Set. According to the product page, the solid sunscreen is stated for children from 10 months.
For all products, the product pages say: external use only, do not apply to injured or irritated skin, and stop using if your skin reacts.
Frequently asked questions
Should you apply cream right before climbing?
No. A fresh layer of fat makes holds slippery and clumps the chalk. Care comes after the session, in the evening and on rest days; if you want to apply cream on a climbing day, do it thinly in the morning and wash your hands before the session.
Does the foot cream prevent blisters?
No. It is care for the evening. Blisters are mainly linked to friction and moisture in the boot; what counts against them is broken-in boots, suitable socks and taping pressure points early.
What do I give if I don't know whether the person likes scent?
The beeswax hand cream and the solid sunscreen contain no added fragrance; the hand cream smells lightly of beeswax. The foot cream, the pitch salve and the lemongrass lip balm have a clear scent.
Does a solid cream melt in the backpack?
In direct sun or a hot car it can soften or melt and becomes solid again as it cools. In winter it gets harder; in an inside pocket close to the body it stays spreadable.
Can the skincare come along on a flight to a climbing trip?
Solid sticks usually do not count as liquids, creams in a tin are a borderline case, salves go in the bag. Security staff decide. More in Does Cream Count as a Liquid in Hand Luggage?
Is there a vegan option?
Yes, the Solid Vegan Hand Cream - Bergamot, also in the vegan hand care set. The foot cream, pitch salve, lip balms and sunscreen contain beeswax.
