In winter, many people's hands get rough, often in the same places: on the knuckles, the fingertips, the edges of the nails. There is usually a hand cream lying around somewhere, and yet it is rarely used because it is too runny, smells too strong or sits in the wrong drawer. A good gift for dry hands solves exactly these small things.
What a gift for dry hands should do
- Fat rather than lots of water: Rough hands mainly need a film that keeps moisture in the skin. The difference between a water-rich moisturiser and a fat-rich cream is explained in Rich cream or moisturiser? What dry skin needs. Our solid hand creams are water-free and consist mainly of wax and plant oils.
- In the right place: Someone who washes a lot needs the tin at the washbasin; someone who types a lot, a small amount at the desk; someone who wants to care for their hands in the evening, a salve by the bed. Two products for two places can therefore make more sense than one.
- Scent to suit the person: Without added fragrance you rarely go wrong. Anyone who likes citrus or herbs will enjoy a scent.
- Refillable: The tin stays, only the refill is bought again. How that works is explained in Refillable Hand Cream: How the Refill Works.
Ideas by situation
Frequent hand washing: Anyone who washes their hands often in the kitchen, the workshop or with the family should apply a thin layer straight afterwards. According to its ingredient list, the Solid Hand Cream - Beeswax consists of beeswax, olive and sunflower oil, St. John's wort and aloe extract. It fits next to the washbasin. Why frequent washing dries out the hands is explained in Dry, cracked hands: causes and what helps.
Office and desk: At the desk, a small amount massaged in well counts, mainly on the backs of the hands. How to do that without a greasy keyboard and paper is covered in Hand care at the office without a greasy keyboard. A solid cream only releases what you stroke over the skin and does not leak in a bag.
For the night: In the evening, more is fine. The Beeswax Salve – Larch & Mandarin in a Glass Jar (50 g, €12.90), made from olive, almond and castor oil, beeswax, larch resin and propolis, is softer than the hand cream and smells of mandarin, rosemary and fir. Together with a pair of thin cotton gloves it becomes an overnight hand mask; how that works is covered in Overnight hand mask: what it does and how to do it.
Split fingertips and nail edges: Here targeted care in the evening matters, with a salve or solid cream on the affected areas. Open cracks are not creamed. More in Cracked, split fingertips: causes and what helps.
For older people: Over the years, hands dry out more easily. What matters then for care and packaging is covered in Why do hands get drier with age?
If they already have the tin: Then the Solid Hand Cream Refill - Beeswax or the Solid Vegan Hand Cream Refill - Bergamot (30 g each, €7.90) makes a small gesture. Which of the two creams suits whom is shown in Solid hand cream: beeswax or bergamot – which one suits you?

Scent, allergies and age limits
This information comes from the product pages.
- No added fragrance: the beeswax hand cream and its refill. They smell lightly of beeswax.
- With essential oils: the bergamot hand cream (declared are limonene, geraniol, citral and linalool), the beeswax salve (mandarin, rosemary, fir; limonene, pinene, terpinene, linalool, terpinolene) as well as the soaps, the foot cream and the lemongrass lip balm in the sets. An overview is in Without fragrance and essential oils: ingredients at a glance.
- Resin and propolis: The beeswax salve contains larch resin and propolis, the pitch salve larch resin. According to the product page, anyone allergic to colophony, tree resin, propolis, Peru balsam or fragrances should check with a doctor before use. More in Colophony allergy, propolis, beeswax: symptoms and advice.
- Almonds: The beeswax salve and the lip balms contain almond oil.
- Age limits: According to the product page, the beeswax salve is not intended for children under 3 because of its essential oils. The foot cream in the sets is not suitable for children under 7 because it contains eucalyptol and camphor.
- Vegan: only the bergamot hand cream with its refill and set. All other creams and salves mentioned contain beeswax.
For all products, the product pages say: do not apply to injured or irritated skin, and stop using if your skin reacts. If hands stay cracked for weeks despite care, itch badly, if cracks bleed or areas become inflamed, have this checked by a doctor. Then a cream is not the right gift, an appointment is.
Frequently asked questions
Should I give hand cream with or without scent?
If you don't know the person's taste, without added fragrance. The beeswax hand cream smells lightly of beeswax, the bergamot version clearly of citrus.
Is a solid hand cream greasy?
That depends on the amount. A small amount, massaged in well, is barely noticeable after a short while. More cream belongs to the evening.
Should I give a moisturiser or a rich cream?
For rough, frequently washed hands, usually the richer care. A water-based cream can complement it but does not replace the film.
What is the difference between tin and refill?
The refill contains the same cream without a tin. Once the tin is empty, you press the refill into it and keep using the tin. For the hand cream, tin and refill each contain 30 g.
What if the hands stay dry despite cream?
Often it comes down to too small amounts, the timing or frequent washing that removes the care again. The most common reasons are listed in Dry hands despite moisturising: why, and what helps.
Do you need special gloves for a hand mask?
No. Thin, washable cotton gloves are enough. They keep the salve on the hands and protect the bed linen.
