At a Secret Santa (in German, “Wichteln”), everyone draws a name and buys a gift up to an agreed amount, whether at work, in a club, at school or in the family. Often the name on the slip belongs to someone you only know from lunch breaks or training. You then don’t know whether the person likes lavender, lives vegan or reacts to anything. Skincare is an obvious choice here, because many people know dry hands and lips in winter. A few considerations and a selection that fits the budget help make sure the gift gets used rather than passed on.
What matters when your Secret Santa gift is skincare
- Something everyone needs: most people care for their hands, lips and body. Face care depends more on skin type and habit, and a deodorant can be read as a hint at a Secret Santa.
- Subtle scent: not everyone likes a strong herbal or floral scent. Products without essential oils only smell faintly of their raw materials, for example of beeswax.
- For women and men alike: a tin or a stick without a floral scent works no matter whose name you drew. More ideas for men are on the page Skincare gifts for men: ideas that actually get used.
- Small and practical: a lip balm fits in a jacket pocket, a tin of hand cream in a desk drawer.
- Packaging with the ingredient list: leave the original packaging on. The ingredients are listed there, and the recipient can check for themselves whether anything doesn’t suit them.

Scent, allergies and age: what the product pages say
At a Secret Santa you often don’t know the person’s preferences or allergies. The following information comes from the ingredient lists and safety notes on the product pages.
- Without essential oils: the hand cream with beeswax (a light natural scent of beeswax), the body butter in both sizes (honey scent from the beeswax), the lip balm with SPF 15 (scent from vanilla extract), the aloe serum and the almond oil. An overview of all products is on the page Without fragrance and essential oils: ingredients at a glance.
- With essential oils: the lemongrass lip balm, the bergamot hand cream (lemon and bergamot), the foot cream (rosemary, eucalyptus, clary sage), the beeswax salve (mandarin, rosemary, fir) and all five soaps. Components of these oils such as linalool, limonene or citral are listed individually in the ingredients. What they mean is explained in Essential oils and fragrance allergens.
- Raw materials some people react to: almond oil is in both lip balms, in the beeswax salve and of course in the almond oil itself. The beeswax salve also contains propolis and larch resin; notes on this are in Colophony allergy, propolis, beeswax. The soaps contain coconut oil.
- With or without beeswax: both lip balms, the hand cream with beeswax, the body butter, the foot cream and the beeswax salve contain beeswax. Without beeswax are the bergamot hand cream (with candelilla wax, vegan according to the product page), the soaps, the aloe serum and the almond oil.
- Age information: according to its product page, the foot cream is not suitable for children under 7 because it contains eucalyptol and camphor. Because of the essential oils, the beeswax salve is not intended for children under 3.
Every product page states the same principle: if skin irritation or an allergic reaction occurs, stop using the product and seek medical advice. If in doubt, try new skincare on a small area first, for example the inside of the elbow.
Making sure the gift gets used
Solid skincare is new to some people, and a hard cream in a tin can look impractical at first. A short note helps: stroke a warm fingertip over the surface a few times, then a small amount is enough. Full instructions are in How do I apply a solid cream correctly? Until the gift exchange, keep the gift somewhere cool and dry, not on the radiator and not in the car; solid creams soften in the warmth.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you spend on a Secret Santa gift?
The group agrees on the amount beforehand. At €10, a hand cream or a bar of soap on its own works, or a lip balm with a loofah sponge. At €15 you can combine two small products, for example hand cream and lip balm for €14.80 together.
Is skincare a good Secret Santa gift for men?
Yes, if it is something for everyday use: a hand cream without a floral scent, a lip balm or a soap with a herbal scent such as eucalyptus and sage.
What do I give if I know nothing about the person?
Small products without essential oils, such as the hand cream with beeswax or the lip balm with SPF 15. If you would rather leave the choice entirely to the person, there is a digital gift voucher with a value you choose, starting at €10.
Can I give deodorant at a Secret Santa?
You can, but a deodorant may be read as a hint about body odour. At an anonymous gift exchange, hand, lip or body care is the less awkward choice.
What applies to a Secret Santa among children, for example at school?
Pay attention to the age information on the product pages: the foot cream is not suitable for children under 7, and the beeswax salve is not intended for children under 3. Products without essential oils include, for example, the lip balm with SPF 15 and the travel-size body butter. If you are unsure, briefly ask the parents.
Can a Secret Santa gift be homemade?
Yes. A jar of fine sugar, a small bottle of plant oil and a card with the recipe make a body scrub that the recipient mixes portion by portion. Recipe and amounts are in Making a body scrub from oil and sugar. Write the ingredients on the jar.
