Luffa Shower Sponge - Cleansing & Exfoliation

A loofah is not a sea sponge but the fibre structure of a fruit: the sponge gourd, a member of the gourd family. The ripe fruits are dried, the skin and seeds are removed, and what remains is the firm network of plant fibres. Our loofah sponges come from Egypt and are 100 % plant-based.

Soak it briefly in warm water until it softens. Then add soap or shower gel and massage the skin in circular movements with light pressure. As an exfoliation, once or twice a week is enough; on the other days, use it more gently for washing. Avoid freshly shaved, irritated or injured skin.

In our experience, it lasts three to four months with good care before the fibres give way. Because a wet natural sponge offers germs good conditions, many guides recommend replacing it sooner with daily use. At the latest when it smells musty, gets dark spots or falls apart, replace it.

After every shower, rinse it thoroughly, squeeze it out firmly and hang it in an airy place outside the shower so it dries quickly. If it stays wet in the corner of the shower, it can turn musty or go mouldy; with natural fibres, that is normal. How to clean it more thoroughly in between is explained in our loofah sponge guide.

We do not recommend it. Even when soaked, the fibres are quite coarse, and the skin on the face is thinner than on the body. A soft washcloth is the better choice for the face.

A loofah is made of plant fibres and is firmer and rougher than the usual plastic mesh sponges. Dry, it is hard; wet, it softens but stays grippier. Unlike natural sea sponges, a loofah is purely plant-based and therefore vegan.

Because you replace it regularly. With a set of 3, 5 or 10, you have spares in the cupboard and pay less per piece than when buying one at a time.

Any solid soap or shower gel. With a solid soap such as Lavender or Rosemary & Lemon, simply rub the wet sponge on the soap until it lathers. If you like it stronger, use the exfoliating soap Coffee & Orange, but with less pressure. So that the soap dries between uses, place it on the loofah soap dish.
