Plastic, all of a sudden? Here's why we're going with a reusable system

It's something you'll basically never see from us: plastic packaging. And for good reason – there's a huge plastic waste problem worldwide! The fact that we're now using a PET bottle anyway, and with full conviction, is down to a revolutionary change brought about by zerooo.

The choice between glass and plastic has never been easy when it comes to sustainability. On one side you have environmental damage from plastic waste, on the other high CO₂ emissions from glass. Glass packaging does avoid the waste problem, but because of its energy-intensive production and recycling at temperatures of up to 1,600 degrees Celsius, it needs about six times the energy compared to plastic.

And on transport and safety, plastic comes out ahead too: the light, more shatterproof packaging is CO₂-saving in transport, safer to use and often more durable than the breakable glass versions.

So what's changed now with the bottles from zerooo? The PET bottle is part of a reusable system! After use, the new PET deposit bottles are simply handed in at return machines, collected, cleaned and refilled. This does away with two big challenges: waste is minimised and the energy needed for recycling is reduced.

And when a bottle reaches the end of its reuse cycle, things continue sustainably: during the cleaning process it's collected and, thanks to the single-type material, processed back into equivalent new products. That creates an almost endless cycle that keeps waste and emissions to a minimum.

With this reuse concept, we're helping to further reduce the ecological footprint of our packaging. Once your Aloe Vera Serum is empty, you can now return the deposit bottle easily at Budni, Müller, Edeka, REWE and Globus self-service stores as well as at some zero-waste shops.
