Well-kept hands for your wedding: a four-week plan

Feste Handcreme mit Bienenwachs von forpeople: Metalldose und Cremestück

During the exchange of rings and in many photos, your hands are in the picture. Rough knuckles, dry cuticles and cracked fingertips cannot be sorted out the evening before, but they can with some lead time. This post describes a plan for the four weeks before the wedding, for both of you who are getting married.

Why four weeks?

The horny layer of the skin renews itself all the time, but not overnight. With a fixed routine, many people notice a difference after just a few days; torn cuticles and rough spots take longer. Four weeks give you time to build a habit and leave some slack if one week gets lost in the bustle. What can be behind persistently dry hands is explained in the guide Dry hands despite moisturising: why?

The second reason: in the last week you no longer try anything new. Whatever you use on the wedding day should already be familiar to your skin. How to check a new product in advance is described under Trying a new product: how do I test it on a small area?

The plan at a glance

WhenWhat you doWhat for
Four weeks beforeLook at your hands: where is the skin rough, where does it tear? Wear gloves for washing up, cleaning and gardening. Apply cream every evening.Reduce the triggers and build a habit.
Three weeks beforeOil your cuticles daily and do not cut them.Dry cuticles become supple and no longer stick up.
Two weeks beforeTwo overnight hand masks. A light scrub only if the skin is unbroken. The care film stays undisturbed for hours.
One week beforeDo not try anything new. Manicure one to two days before the date.No surprises shortly before the day.
On the wedding dayApply a thin layer in the morning, well ahead of the exchange of rings and the photos.Well-kept hands without shine and without slippery fingers.

Week by week up to the wedding day

Four weeks before. Washing-up liquid, cleaners and hot water dissolve fat from your skin. Gloves and lukewarm water take the most strain off it. In the evening you apply cream to your hands, above all to knuckles, fingertips and the edges of the nails. With a solid cream, two to three strokes across the palm are enough; the technique is shown in How do I apply a solid cream correctly?

Three weeks before. In the evening, put a drop of oil on each cuticle and massage it in. The cuticle is not cut; after a shower you can carefully push it back with a soft cloth. You do not tear off a piece of skin that sticks up, you cut it off close to its base. More on this: Dry, torn cuticles: how to care for them.

Two weeks before. For a hand mask, you apply roughly two to three times the usual amount of cream or salve in the evening and put cotton gloves on top. Two nights in this week are enough. How it works is described under Overnight hand mask: what it does and how to do it. A scrub is not a must. If you do one, do it once, lightly and only on unbroken skin.

One week before. You stick with what has worked. If the manicure is one to two days before the date, there is time in case something needs touching up. Ask for the cuticles to be pushed back only.

On the wedding day. Apply a thin layer of cream in the morning after your shower and work it in well. Freshly applied cream first lies on the skin as a film: your fingers are more slippery, and the back of your hand shines in the flash. So leave a gap before the ceremony and the photos. If your skin still shines clearly after a few minutes, a cloth takes off the rest.

For both of you, and for hands that work a lot

The plan applies to both of you who receive a ring that day. If you dislike using cream because everything slips afterwards, use little during the day and put the larger amount on in the evening; more on this under Hand cream for men: what really matters.

Hands that wash, turn screws or dig a lot at work tend to need longer than four weeks. Then gloves at work and the care afterwards matter most. Open or bleeding cracks do not belong under a cream. If they do not close, or if the skin is red and swollen, have a doctor look at them in good time.

Summer wedding: backs of the hands and the sun

At an outdoor ceremony, the backs of your hands are in the sun for hours, and after every hand wash the protection is gone again. Put sun protection on them and reapply after washing your hands. Why the hands in particular get forgotten is explained in the guide Sun protection for the backs of your hands. Mineral sunscreen can look white on the backs of the hands; try out before the day how it looks on you.

Care from forpeople for the four weeks

For the backs of the hands in summer there is the Solid Sunscreen SPF50 with mineral filters. Do not use the products on injured skin. If you notice a skin reaction, stop using them.

Frequently asked questions

Are two weeks of hand care before the wedding enough too?
They do make a difference if you apply cream every evening and look after your cuticles. With four weeks you have more leeway.

Should I use hand cream on the wedding day?
Yes, but a thin layer and well ahead of the exchange of rings. Fresh cream makes your fingers slippery and lets the back of your hand shine.

What do I do if a piece of cuticle tears shortly before?
Do not tear it off. Cut the piece that sticks up close to its base with clean small scissors and care for the spot afterwards. If it turns red, warm or swollen, have a doctor look at it.
