Natural cosmetics. But what exactly does that mean?

As a maker of natural cosmetics, all of our ingredients are of (natural and) organic origin. So when it comes to the question of „organic“, we make no compromises. That starts, for example, with the beeswax (certified by Demeter or Bioland) and goes all the way to the essential oils (organic sage, organic rosemary, etc.). When choosing our packaging materials, too, we look for organic quality seals (wood fibres from FSC-certified forestry).

While mineral-oil-based ingredients have a long tradition in cosmetics, we want to clearly distance ourselves from them. Because their production creates aromatic hydrocarbons, so-called "Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons" (MOAH), which are suspected of encouraging the growth of cancer cells. That's why Stiftung Warentest advises in particular against buying lip balm products that contain MOAH. That risk has no place in our Auf’s Mäulchen, or anywhere else for that matter! Instead we use valuable plant-based raw materials such as shea butter, kernel oils or macerates from flower extracts, which nourish the skin with their high-quality fatty acids and care for it long-lastingly.

On top of that, our products are:

• free from synthetic fragrances: Our products either get by entirely without fragrances – because the beeswax brings its pleasant scent along naturally – or we rely on fragrances that are exclusively of natural origin. These include, among others, essential oils such as organic sage, organic bergamot or organic lavender.
• packaged sustainably: we focus on reusability, an especially high recycling rate above all, and materials of natural origin. You won't find a single product that contains plastic packaging.
• microplastic-free: Microplastic is attractive for cosmetics for various reasons. As a binder, filler or abrasive, the synthetic material is still used in cosmetics despite the growing problem and awareness. Microplastic, however, lingers in the environment for decades; treatment plants usually can't filter out these tiny particles, and so the residues end up in lakes, rivers and seas, where they are in turn taken in by fish. Not a treat, the way we see it! All of our ingredients are therefore fully biodegradable and so pose no danger to the environment, animals or people.

• no preservatives: Thanks to doing without water, we can easily avoid synthetic preservatives.
• Fair partnerships: We have got to know our beekeepers personally and built a firm, long-term cooperation. The same goes for our suppliers and contract partners.
• Hormones? We'd rather go without! In 2013 the WHO classed the use of hormonally active chemicals as a global threat. Hormonal substances are no rarity in cosmetics either, as a study by BUND concluded, suspecting one in four cosmetic products of containing added parabens or chemical UV filters. That doesn't go in our tube – or in our tin or stick, for that matter!
