What is bee salve – and what makes it special?

Bee salve is one of the oldest skincare preparations around. At its core it consists of beeswax (Cera Alba) and plant oils – two ingredients that have proven themselves in folk medicine for centuries. What sets it apart from a modern drugstore cream: no emulsifiers, no added water, no synthetic preservatives.

The forpeople bee salve goes a step further and adds organic propolis extract, larch resin and selected cold-pressed organic oils – all from controlled organic cultivation or direct trade. The result is a waterless salve that needs no preservatives, because water is the very reason preservatives become necessary.

"100 % active ingredients. 0 % fillers. No water that dilutes. No preservative that irritates."

— Core principle of the forpeople formulation
What the research shows ¹

Beeswax & the skin barrier: In clinical studies, beeswax has been examined for its potential as an occlusive protective layer supporting the skin's moisture barrier. Published data from the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (Nong et al., 2023) describe the barrier-protective properties of beeswax in skincare preparations.

Propolis in dermatological research: Propolis is one of the most studied beehive substances. Laboratory investigations and case studies examine its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. A systematic review on propolis preparations (PubMed, PMC9504298, 2022) described indications of potential wound-healing effects – although study quality varies.

Important note: The forpeople bee salve is a certified cosmetic product. It is intended for the care of stressed skin. None of the study results mentioned relate directly to this product and do not constitute a health claim.

How to use: applying bee salve correctly

The waterless texture is deliberately formulated so that a small amount goes a long way. Simply apply, massage in briefly – the salve does not absorb completely but forms a delicate protective film.

  1. Prepare the skin Gently clean the area and pat lightly dry – do not rub completely dry.
  2. Less is more A pea-sized amount is enough for your hands or a larger area. Warm between your fingers first.
  3. Gently massage in Massage in with circular movements until the salve has spread. A light film remains – that's intentional.
  4. Repeat as needed For very dry skin, apply 2–3× daily, especially in the evening. Overnight, fix with thin cotton gloves for intensive care.
  5. Insect bites & irritations Apply directly to the affected area. No rubbing – a gentle dab is enough.

Who is bee salve suitable for – and in what situations?

Bee salve is not a specialist product for a single use case – it's an all-rounder that works reliably exactly when your skin needs something.

Why the forpeople bee salve is different

Dozens of salves line the drugstore shelf. Most have one thing in common: water as the first ingredient on the INCI list. Water is cheap, stretches the formula – and at the same time requires preservatives.

Frequently asked questions about bee salve

Answers to the most searched questions about bee salve, propolis & beeswax.

Bee salve is a natural cosmetics preparation based on beeswax and plant oils, often supplemented with propolis and plant resins. It is used to care for dry, cracked or environmentally stressed skin – for example on hands, elbows, lips or after insect bites. The forpeople bee salve is a certified cosmetic product with no health claims.
As a cosmetic product, bee salve cares for the skin, protects it from moisture loss and makes it more supple. Many users report that cracked skin becomes softer and irritations calm down. Bee salve is not a medicine and does not replace medical treatment for skin conditions.
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic condition that should be managed by a doctor. Bee salve is not a therapeutic agent and is not a substitute for medically prescribed treatment. Some people with dry, sensitive skin use natural cosmetic skincare products as a complement – an individual skin test is important here, as even natural ingredients like beeswax or propolis can trigger reactions. When in doubt, consult your doctor.
Dab a small amount of bee salve onto the area directly after the bite – do not rub. The beeswax-propolis film settles over the irritated spot. For severe reactions, allergic symptoms or bites to the face or neck area, seek medical help immediately. Bee salve is not an antiallergic.
Propolis – also called "bee glue" – is a mixture of beeswax and resin components from plants that bees use to seal and protect the hive. It contains flavonoids and polyphenols that are scientifically studied for their properties. The forpeople bee salve contains organic propolis extract from controlled organic beekeeping.
The forpeople bee salve contains no synthetic fragrances or preservatives and is generally suitable for children from age 3. A small skin test should always be done before first use. For children with known allergies to bee products or tree pollen, bee salve should be avoided. When in doubt, consult your paediatrician.
For normal care, once in the morning and once in the evening is enough. For very dry or cracked skin, it can be applied several times a day, especially in the evening before bed. Since the salve is waterless, it lines the skin longer than a conventional lotion – less is often more.
The forpeople bee salve contains exclusively natural ingredients: organic olive oil, organic almond oil, organic castor oil, organic beeswax (direct trade), larch resin, natural alcohol, organic mandarin peel oil, organic rosemary oil, organic propolis extract and organic white fir oil. No parabens, no silicones, no water, no synthetic preservatives. Full INCI in the product section above.
No. Bee salve contains beeswax (Cera Alba) and propolis – both are animal-derived ingredients from beekeeping. This makes the product non-vegan. However, it is PETA-certified cruelty-free and no animal testing is carried out. Those looking for a vegan alternative will find skincare products without beeswax in the forpeople range.
All three share the same beeswax base – but with different focuses: The bee salve is the all-rounder with a propolis focus for everyday use all over the body. The SOS pine salve relies on pine and larch resin for particularly intensive care of heavily stressed skin areas. The solid foot cream is specifically designed for calluses, soles and the particular demands of foot skin.
